History of Nimmo Bay

Nimmo Bay Resort was incorporated in October of 1980.  The lodge was purchased as an old float house on a new float, and was towed to Port McNeill from Scott Cove on Gilford Island.  The rebuilding of the lodge started in the winter of 1980 and was completed on April 28th, 1981, and towed into Nimmo Bay on the Mainland of BC, on May 1st, 1981.  Our first guests were in June of this same year.

Right from the beginning we had our environment in mind as we planned and installed a hydro electric system, powered by a Pelton wheel.  The first light bulb flashed on, May 27, 1982 when the sound of pure power was heard in Nimmo Bay.  Today the Pelton wheel still operates efficiently and provides power for 9 months of the year from the snow melt and rain water from Mount Stephens.

Throughout the following years, we moved from 8 to 18 guests, from a floating lodge with four bedrooms to having private 9 inter-tidal chalets, and from small, 14 foot fishing boats to A Star helicopters.  Fishing has always been at the root of our adventures, although we do a host of other activities such as whale watching, heli-hiking, beachcombing, kayaking, glacier trekking, and wild life viewing.  We now travel from sea level to 13,000 feet throughout 50,000 sq. miles of coastal and mountain wilderness, traveling where no one has gone before and discovering new horizons and new rivers filled with beautiful wild salmon, trout, and Steelhead.  We even have adventure packages without the use of helicopters at all.

Our food has become legendary as have our fabulous employees.  Our Theory of Hospitality has become widely known and our mission statement  tells it all:

To Fly is Human ... To Hover, Divine.

Nimmo Bay has always been a family business,  All the Murray chldren are involved with our operation.  Fraser, Georgia and Clifton will one day be the proprietors of a newer Nimmo Bay, as their youthful enthusiasm and brand new ideas bring fourth the changes that are so necessary to keep things fresh and wonderful for the eyes of our global guests, new and old.

The first 30 years have been encapsulated in our book, Finding Nimmo, which is for sale, and tells a pioneering story of a coastal family bound and determined to do it their way and make it work.  I don't beleive any of us would change a thing as we have been blessed with understanding the grandeur  and the majesty of nature, meeting exceptional international people, while being able to catch really big fish.  And as Harry Truman once said, "All men are equal before Fish".   And the secret to our daily success is that everyone is treated equally when at Nimmo Bay.  We are all friends and family after just four short but incredible days.

"I will return back to Nimmo Bay and although I don’t know if it will be as special as my first trip, I’m going to keep coming back to see if I can recapture the magic. Thanks again for creating an experience that outperformed the great expectations we had coming in."
